Glyphosate – or N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine – kills weeds by blocking the formation of aromatic amino acids which are essential for the synthesis of proteins in plants. Aromatic amino acids are only produced by plants and bacteria. Humans, mammals, and fish obtain their aromatic amino acids through their diet. Therefore, only plants are susceptible to glyphosate.
