Dimethoate is a systemic insecticide and acaricide with contact and stomach action. Acting through inhibition of cholinesterase enzymes, it is used to control a wide range of sucking and chewing pests including Hemiptera, Thysanoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera and Acari in a variety of row-crops, orchards and vegetables. Aphid control in cereals and other crops is among the most important uses of dimethoate. In addition, the product is also used for control of flies in stables.
