Technical Information

Natural pyrethrins are extracted from the flowers of the white marguerite, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium. Natural pyrethrins are a mixture of six esters derived from combinations of chrysanthemic acid, pyrethric acid and three alcohols. The synthetic pyrethroids, which are currently among the insecticides most used in agriculture, are all derived from chrysanthemic acid. In contrast, acrinathrin is the first molecule which is derived from pyrethric acid.

Therefore, acrinathrin differs from other pyrethroids in being the only representative of norpyrethric esters. Acrinathrin consists of a single isomer – the most biologically active of all 16 potential isomers. This characteristic property improves efficacy and reduces the risk of side effects.

Acrinathrin is a non-systemic compound which acts on insects and mites mainly through contact but also by ingestion. It disrupts the normal functioning of nerve sodium channels, leading to hyperactivity, paralysis and death. Acrinathrin provides excellent knock-down efficacy and good residual activity (2-3 weeks).

To prevent the build up of resistance, it is recommended that the number of acrinathrin product applications is limited to two per crop cycle and that applications are alternated with products belonging to other chemical families.

The success of acrinathrin is based upon:

  • Broad spectrum of activity
  • Highly selective in key crops
  • Both insecticidal and miticidal action
  • Contact and stomach action
  • Excellent knockdown effect and good residual activity (2-3 weeks)
  • A favorable environmental and toxicological profile
  • A water based formulation with low toxicity
  • No classification for the commercial product
