Imidacloprid was introduced in 1991 and is today the largest insecticide in the world measured in sales turnover. It belongs to the group of chloronicotinyl insecticides or neonicotinoids, which is characterized by having a different mode of action in comparison with other insecticides currently being marketed, e.g. OP’s, pyrethroids and carbamates.
The compound’s excellent systemic properties, relatively low application rates and long residual activity are important key properties. This renders imidacloprid attractive for use in foliar and seed treatments. Due to the quick uptake of the active substance via the roots, imidacloprid may also be applied via irrigation systems (drench), in-furrow and via granular applications. Imidacloprid can also be applied as stem/trunk application. |
